Any online teaching job applicants who makes it past initial screening (a check that they meet basic education and work experience requirements) may be asked to submit a letter of intent, character and/or personal references, and conduct a phone interview. Upon clearing those hurdles, a job applicant may be required to go through online orientation and training, teaching one class under supervision before being officially approved to facilitate online classes alone.

An online college instructor is often required to possess at least a master’s degree; many universities require a PhD.
