Learn about two newborn essentials, important things to do before infant's arrival. Add finding a pediatrician & setting up the infant's room to pre-birth baby checklist.

The time immediately following the birth of a baby is extremely hectic. First-time parents who take care of certain important tasks ahead of time will be less stressed than their counterparts who did not do the same.

Discussed below are very important things expectant parents should take care of before the mother’s due date.

Baby Checklist Item – Finding a Pediatrician

In the United States, it is common practice for a newborn baby’s pediatrician to visit the infant in the hospital the day after birth. Hospital personnel may ask the mother or father the name of the chosen pediatrician sometime during the hospital registration process, and the hospital staff will notify the pediatrician of the child’s birth. If the hospital engages in this practice, it would be helpful to choose a pediatrician ahead of time in order to avoid picking one out of a hat, so to speak, when the baby is born.

Like many doctors with full schedules, some pediatricians require that prospective patients attend a “getting to know the doctor” type of information session; in this case, the prospective mother and/or father should attend the session before providing the hospital with the chosen pediatrician’s name, number, and address.

Essential Thing to Do for Newborn Infants – Set up Baby’s Room

The baby needs somewhere to sleep and a place for clothing when he or she comes home from the hospital. Even if the parents plan to keep the baby in their room for a while, it would be a good idea to decorate and furnish the baby’s room before the mother’s due date.

Why should this be done ahead of time? Because these tasks take time, and new parents have very little time to spare once the baby arrives. Furthermore, any furniture that must be ordered, such as a rocking chair or glider, may take up to several months to arrive.
