State Income Taxes – CA, IL, & NY Income Tax Return Refund Status
Here is how to check on the status of California, Illinois, and New York state tax return refunds:
- CA – The State of California Franchise Tax Board collects the state’s income taxes and issues income tax refunds. To check the status of a California income tax refund, visit the Franchise Tax Board website. Individuals will need to know applicable social security numbers, numbers in the mailing address, the zip code, and refund amount in whole dollars claimed on Form 540, Form 540A, or Form 540NR (long or short form).
- IL – The Illinois Department of Revenue offers a really simple-to-use income tax refund status inquiry system. The process starts with entry of a social security number on file with the Illinois Department of Revenue. If the SSN is valid, and a return is on file, the individual will be able to access refund information electronically. The state notes that it may take seven days for an electronically-filed state income tax return to appear in the system, and up to ten weeks for a paper return.
- NY – The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance will activate its online tool for checking state tax refunds in late January or a little bit later. To check New York tax refunds using this tool, navigate to tax.state.ny.us, and click on “check my refund status” on the left side of the page.

The IRS conveniently offers a way to check federal income tax refunds. The agency’s Where’s My Refund? feature can be accessed online or by phone and will provide income tax refund status for the most recent tax year.
