The Big Green Help is Nickelodeon’s broad initiative aimed at helping kids understand the importance of environmental awareness and carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction.
What is the Nick.com Big Green Help? How Can Kids Save the Environment?
The premise behind Nick.com’s Big Green Help is simple: find positive ways to protect the earth every day. There are four elements to the Big Green Help, as follows:
- Slow the Flow. This pertains to slowing down the use of Earth’s natural resources. Nickelodeon asks kids to take the environmentally friendly actions of turning off lights, chargers, televisions, and other appliances when not in use as well as replacing ordinary light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).
- Recycle and Precycle. This refers to buying recycled items or only items that can be recycled. Pledges in this category include the following: recycle as much as possible (paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass), forgo bottled water for tap water, and use reusable lunch bags.
- Grow the Green. This one’s simple – grow green things that will absorb carbon dioxide. Under this category, kids are asked to plant four trees this year, use recycled paper products, or convince one person per month to replace five regular light bulbs with CFLs.
- Curb the Car. This one is aimed at getting people to use alternate means of transportation to reduce the carbon dioxide output of large vehicles. Pledges related to this include ditching the car four miles per week (and going on foot, bike, or skateboard instead), turning off the car engine instead of idling, and reminding parents to keep car tires inflated.
Daily Green Tips: Recycling, Going Green, Being Environmentally Friendly
The Big Green Help website has been offering one green tip per day since April 23, 2008. The first one was to use recycled paper products; more recent tips include using reusable lunch containers instead of sandwich bags and to send evites instead of paper invitations for a party. For the holidays, the site suggests keeping a recycling bin ready to collect gift wrapping when the presents are being opened.
Perhaps the most interesting part about the Big Green Help challenge is that kids obviously can’t achieve all of the pledges alone. Many of them involve adults, such as the ones about not idling a car, keeping car tires inflated, and buying CFLs. So by getting kids interested in the environment, Nickelodeon is getting the attention of an exponential number of adults (parents, teachers, neighbors, etc).
